Beer Battered Onion Rings
Use Barrett’s Original mix and your favourite brew to create these light and crispy onion rings for another perfect braai side dish.
Individual rings of sliced onion are coated in a light beer-based batter before being deep-fried to a soft, slightly sweet, slightly tangy perfection.

Ingredients
For the Cake
- 1 x Barrett’s Ridge Beer Bread Mix – Original
- 2 Large white onions, sliced into rings
- 330ml Beer of your choice
- Oil for frying
Method
Pour half the Barrett’s Beer Bread Mix into a large bowl and add 330ml beer of your choice.
Whisk the mixture till light and fluffy.
Pour the other half of the mix into a shallow bowl for dusting.
Heat two inches of oil in a frying pan.
Dust the onion rings in dry mix and shake off any excess.
Dip the rings in the batter, coating well.
Carefully place into the hot oil and fry for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown on both sides.
Drain on paper towel.
Serve hot, with lemon wedges and coarse salt.
